Vanilla-almond soft serve takes me back...

Forgive me, my readers, for I have eaten Kyotofu soft serve again. This week it was Vanilla Almond, the flavor that started it all for me, and I couldn't resist. Something about the hot, humid weather and cool, silky soymilk soft serve... the mixture is like vinegar and baking soda in the proverbial flavor volcano (huh?).

Exceptional

The almond flavor is really only forceful in the first bite-- it's reminiscent of almond extract or marzipan, and it's strong but certainly not unpleasant. But something happens after the first bite; the almond fades into the background, and the mild, mellow vanilla flavor comes to the fore. I also happen to think that vanilla almond, even more than their straight vanilla flavors, is the perfect counterpoint to their fruit compote topping. The sweet, jammy syrup, which this time had an intriguing lime inflection along with the requisite big hunks of stewed blackberries and strawberries, perks up the vanilla almond flavor without competing with it. It's sweet, sweet harmony, and it's gone in the span of a few city blocks.
